Zocor
Product Information
Zocor, the brand drug for the generic name Simvastatin is a statin or
cholesterol- lowering medicine. It is an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor which
works by blocking the production of cholesterol by the liver. Besides
lowering the overall blood cholesterol, Zocor especially helps in lowering
the LDL 'bad' cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B
(a protein facilitating cholesterol production) in your blood. Zocor has
also proved to be helpful in increasing the level of HDL 'good' cholesterol
in your blood.
LDL cholesterol is primarily responsible
for the development of coronary artery disease. Thereby, lowering LDL
cholesterol levels retards progression and may even reverse coronary artery
disease. This function of Zocor is also beneficial in reducing the risk
of hardening of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke,
and peripheral vascular disease.
