Lipitor Approved by FDA for Five New Indications

Cholesterol lowering drug Lipitor has been approved by FDA for five new indications in patients with Heart disease. This news was told on Wednesday by Pfizer, Lipitor drug maker.

The five new indication for which Lipitor can be used are:

  1. Reduce the risk of nonfatal heart attacks
  2. Fatal and non-fatal strokes
  3. Certain types of heart surgery
  4. Hospitalizations for heart failure
  5. Chest pain in patients with heart disease.

Earlier Lipitor was approved and used to lower cholesterol level and to reduce cardiovascular events in patients without heart disease.

The approval of Lipitor for five new indications was based on the study done of 10,000 heart disease patients for five years. The major findings of this study was that patients taking 80 mg Lipitor had 22% reduced risk of major cardiovascular events as compared to those taking 10 mg Lipitor. Hospitalization of heart failure patients was also reduced among those who were taking 80 mg Lipitor drug.
