Statins May Benefit Men More than Women
30 Jan. 2007

Statins are used to lower LDL or bad cholesterol. A study was done on the benefits of statins and there use in men and women. The Canadian research suggested that statins reduced the risk of death after first heart attack, but men seem to benefit more as comparison to women while using cholesterol lowering drugs.

Cholesterol lowering drugs like lipitor are prescribed to men and women in the same manner but showed different results among them.

The statins which were used in the study were Lipitor, Pravachol, Zocor, Mevacor and Lescol.

A study done by ASA found that the over the counter pill can reduce the risk of heart attack in men but not the risk of stroke. Second study done on women showed that ASA cut the risk of stroke in women but does not prevent in heart attacks.

This shows that the biological effect or the pharmacological response in men and women does not remain same.
