Cholesterol Prevention Medicines

Cholesterol is a chronic disease which may require life-long treatment. However, there are measures to prevent cholesterol and keeping it in control under normal limits. This includes measures like eating a low (saturated) fat and low cholesterol diet, getting adequate exercise and weight management; and quit smoking.

Apart from changes in behavioral therapy, drug therapy can be used alongside as the prime aspect of cholesterol-lowering treatment is to lower your LDL (bad cholesterol) level enough to reduce your risk of getting heart disease or having a heart attack. Among the several categories of drugs available for cholesterol lowering, the most prominent are statins, bile acid sequestrants, nicotinic acid, and fibric acids. These drug help in

  • Decreasing LDL levels, i.e. the "bad" cholesterol that increases the risk of heart disease.
  • Decreasing triglycerides (a type of fat) in the blood, that also increases the risk of heart disease and
  • Increasing HDL levels, i.e. the "good" cholesterol that offers protection from heart disease.
